History : CARMEL INTER COLLEGE, GORAKHPUR

“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is service”. The purpose of educating the poor and weak which was also the dream of Mother Veronica came true on 21st January 1941 in the shape of Carmel Inter College then known as St. Mary’s School. It began as a Primary school with English as its medium of instruction. The sisters Sr. Marie Antonette, Sr. Joan and and Sr. Bernadette lived along with the boarders in St. Joseph’s church compound, Civil lines. In July 1945, class VII was opened for the wards of the anglo- Indian railway officers with the idea of preparing the students for the Senior Cambridge but due to the political situation, it had to be changed to matriculation. In 1957, the medium of instruction for classes VI – X was changed to Hindi medium and the school was recognized and got affiliated to the U.P Board, Allahabad. St. Mary’s was renamed ‘CARMEL’ in 1970 and in 1971 we opened Intermediate classes in response to growing pressure. We were granted recognition for Arts in 1972 and for Science in 1973. Seeing the popularity of the school and increasing demand for English medium Carmel Inter College was recognized in 2001 by the education department from class VI-XII as an Intermediate College with Hindi and English as the medium of instruction. Later in 2003, we started the commerce stream too. At present the school is governed by religious jurisdiction of the Catholic Bishop of Gorakhpur and is administered by the Apostolic Carmel Educational Society, U.P. with its headquarters at Lucknow, with the strength of 1500 students. “Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”

  • Along with the all-round development of the students, the school also aims at the holistic development of the school. Education through smart classes, well-equipped and modern science labs and computer labs, A.C. auditorium, LCD projector, and a beautiful library in the form of rich wardrobes of science and literature, and a large playground provide a conducive environment for students to study.
  • Enjoyment through fete or school band, picnics or excursions, respect for the poor through social service programs, and instilling the value of sharing through interactive visits to the orphanages, homes for the aged, and homes for specially challenged children are key aspects of the school's ethos. Developing the feeling of brotherhood through inter-religious prayer services, awareness programs to save the environment, sports activities, service learning programs, inter-school competitions, and exhibitions make learning a joyous experience at Carmel Inter College, Gorakhpur.
  • It is through united efforts that good deeds can be accomplished, and we have been successful so far with the wholehearted support and cooperation of the Management, Principal, Staff, Parents, and students. Together, we strive to create a nurturing and dynamic educational environment that fosters growth, empathy, and excellence.
  • As we march ahead into a new dawn with renewed vigor and hope, in the words of Robert Frost, “The woods are lonely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.”
